With a turnover of £1.5 billion and a workforce of around 17,000, Barts Health is a leading healthcare provider and one of the largest NHS trusts in England. The Trust’s five hospitals – St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City, including the Barts Heart Centre, The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, Newham University Hospital in Plaistow, Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone and Mile End Hospital – deliver high quality compassionate care to the 2.5 million people of east London and beyond.
Barts Health NHS Trust is home to three national biobanks and the Bioresource at St Bartholomew’s Hospital is one of the fastest growing medical research programmes. The Trust hosts 21 separate research repositories containing over 500,000 human tissue samples, each linked to a pseudonymised patient record. They include three national cancer biobanks for male, breast and pancreatic tissue. Through Barts Life Sciences, the trust is wanting to integrate, expand and open up these resources to researchers looking to develop new ways of monitoring, diagnosing and treating health conditions.
