The Guided principle emphasises the need for data stewards and data users to listen to diverse voices and have sufficient humility to recognise the value of considering diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

A robust public involvement and engagement (PIE) strategy enables citizens to contribute to and benefit from scientific progress. The public should be meaningfully involved in informing policies regarding data access and use and have a stake in data access decision-making processes. Recognising the value of the knowledge, values and practices of professional stakeholders across disciplines, cultures and traditions is critical in guiding effective data stewardship.
