Research using data about people must be understandable and transparent to all stakeholders.
The Understandable principle recognises that research using data about people can only be fair and trustworthy if its methods are transparent and the use and impact of the data are understandable to all stakeholders. Transparency must extend beyond basic legal requirements and describe the whole research cycle using materials co-developed by the public. The aspirations are designed to unite the ecosystem and help reach a culture of openness and the provision of publicly accessible information on data access processes, how these are governed, and the resulting research outputs. Inclusive and public-informed and reviewed language and formats for sharing will underpin this.
